The last thing you want readers to feel when they read your latest update is to be turned off by what they see. Their time and attention are precious. You, as the writer, need to always be aware of this as you craft your next blog article, newsletter, social media post or wherever it is you’re writing at the moment.
If you do either of these two things in your own business writing, it’s pretty guaranteed that you’ll immediately turn readers off and make them slap down the laptop cover or click through to the next website. Be aware of these issues, though, and you’ll decrease the risk of creating big writing boo-boos that are unforgivable.
I’m going to admit, I’m as much the audience here as the mentor. I really hate these two big things I’m about to share – and I’ve been so upset when they did it that I hit the “unsubscribe” button or just rolled my eyes and immediately moved on to something else. So here we go, then… the Two Big Things your readers won’t forgive you for:
1. Making Readers Nervous, Uncomfortable or Confused: Everything you write should have a clear message and written knowing exactly who your intended audience is and what they want. Do stay on topic. Do deliver a well-crafted message that contains valuable information that is relevant to the topic and niche you regularly address and serve.
Don’t drift into confusing tangents, don’t overshare when it isn’t appropriate and don’t slap your readers in the face with scare tactics or bullying. And never, ever deceive. Trust is the most valuable emotional connection you will develop with your audience in all of your business communication. Break that trust and you’re breaking your business.
2. Not Being Yourself: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Perfect is out – real is where it’s at! Be Yourself in your business writing! This is advice that works for everything from dating to networking to interviews. And it works here too. Don’t feel like you have to write formally, as if your super critical high school English teacher was watching over your shoulder. (I can say this, my mother was a languages teacher. And wow, was she picky!)
When you write, visualize one of your favorite clients or customers sitting across from you. Write as if you are speaking directly to them. Use slang, use unique biz lingo, have fun with it. If you called me on the phone today and we chatted for a few minutes, I would sound pretty much the same as you are reading here.
